The Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound (ECCU) Award in Emergency Medicine Innovation – 2020
The Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound (ECCU) Award in Emergency Medicine Innovation has been established by Dr. David Lewis and Dr. Paul Atkinson to encourage, recognize and inspire innovation in research, emergency medical education and academic initiatives for all aspects related to Emergency Medicine and Critical Care, with a preference to innovations that promote the use of Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS). There will be a minimum of one award valued at a maximum of $1,250.

Biera is the 4th largest city in Mozambique with a population of over 500,000. One hospital provides healthcare for Beira and a surrounding catchment area of hundreds of kilometers. Dr. David Lewis, one of the ECCU founders, was involved with the Ipswich Beira Health Initiative which had helped to set up a new Medical School in Beira. Trauma and Emergency Care courses were established on a twice yearly basis from 2005.

Thanks to the generous support of GE Ultrasound, a team including ECCU faculty travelled to Beira, Mozambique and delivered an introductory course on focused emergency ultrasound. Diagnostic ultrasound is an extremely useful tool in Mozambique and may often be the only form of diagnostic imaging available.
